What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a system of caring for the health of the whole person, by ensuring that the body’s physical structure is balanced and freely functioning.  The maintenance of good mechanical function in the body is essential to good overall health.

Osteopathy was founded in the late 1800’s by Dr Andrew Taylor Still and is underlined by the principle that if the body’s structure is properly aligned, it should function perfectly. The aim of treatment is to help to release areas in ‘dis-ease’ in order to restore balance and function in the local area and homeostasis (balance) in the whole body.

This holistic approach not only takes into account the patients symptoms they present with but also looks into the underlying cause. The focus isn’t always on the “part that hurts” but the Osteopaths trained eye and hands, (as well as a detailed case history) look further afield to ascertain and address any underlying issues which may have led to the symptoms occurring.

What is Cranial Osteopathy?

The primary approach to treatment at Piha Osteopathic Clinic is Osteopathy in the Cranial field (or “Cranial Osteopathy” as it is often known). This is a refined and subtle approach to treating the whole body. It works by palpating and gently manipulating subtle rhythms within the body that affect many systems including the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system and the flow of blood and lymph.

The practitioner gently adjusts tensions throughout the body in order to bring about a positive change. The treatment is guided by the patient’s own body, this makes it a gentle and effective way to help a wide range of conditions in people of all ages from new-born infants, through childhood to old age.

What to expect during an Osteopathy session:

The initial appointment will begin with the taking of a detailed case history.

The Osteopath will then perform an examination of the relevant areas of the body including any necessary orthopaedic tests. Sometimes the Osteopath will require the patient to remove a layer of outer clothing in order to perform a thorough assessment of posture and look for areas of limited mobility.

A Cranial Osteopath will typically treat with their hands under your head, pelvis, back or limbs. The treatment usually lasts around 30 minutes. Patients often report finding the treatment deeply relaxing.

Advice on self-care strategies and referrals will be given when appropriate as part of a holistic approach.

The initial consultation usually lasts between 1 hour – 1 hour 15 minutes. A follow up consultation is between 45-55 minutes.
